Translation error spreads in the German media

According to the German Rheumatology Society, in January 2008, several sources in the German media referred to an article in the magazine Arthritis & Rheumatism, which established a relationship between the length of the ring and index fingers and the likelihood of suffering osteoarthritis of the knee. A translation error in the German article changed osteoarthritis (a degenerative disease) to arthritis (an inflammatory disease), an error which was copied in several other media outlets. This could lead to a flood of confused patients to consult their rheumatologists. www.dgrh.de/?ide=2008

Pioneers in quality: Intertext, the second company in Spain and the first in Catalonia to be awarded a certificate according to the new UNE EN 15038 European regulation for translation services

Unlike ISO 9001:2000, which applies to services and products of all types, this standard defines the criteria for quality in translation services. These criteria have been agreed upon under the auspices of the CEN (European Centre for Standardisation) by all agents in the European translation sector: Spanish and European translators associations, translation companies and representatives of industry and various institutions. The standard, which is closely linked to ISO 9001:2000 as it calls for a quality system that must be subjected to a yearly audit, sets out additional requirements such as the need for proofreading translations, a documented process for selecting translators and defining conditions for their qualifications, as well as specific processes for ensuring the quality of translations. Four years ago, Intertext was one of the first companies in the sector to obtain ISO 9001:2000 certification; now, once again, it is among the first to obtain the new European standard, UNE EN 15038.
